Jeff Callender has been recognized by Ferndale School Board for his exemplary support of Ferndale Schools staff and students. Mr. Callender and Phillips66 are longtime supporters of the school district.

At the presentation, District Superintendent Linda Quinn said, “In over four decades of working with education partners, the partnership with Phillips66 ranks at the top. This partnership is attributed to and thrives because of the efforts of Jeff. Our missions are aligned and we have been benefactors of your generosity. You are one of my heroes—you are a friend, mentor and business partner. Thank you.”

Some ways that Mr. Callender and Phillips66 have supported the district through the years include the following:

•Since the inception of the National Board Certification program over 15 years ago, they have awarded every teacher who has undertaken the certification process and met the rigorous standards with a check for $500 to be used for classroom materials.

•Each year they provide funding for Ferndale science teachers, along with others throughout the region, to participate in professional development seminars on the most up-to-date STEM

(science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) topics.

•On several occasions, Phillips 66 has made financial contributions to support the district CTE (career and technical education) programs at Ferndale High School, like our Power and Energy course.

•Providing funding for the district’s ST Math program at the elementary and middle school levels, and expanding it to the high school level this year.

•Supporting technology by providing a tech kiosk in each school.

•Phillips 66 has also been generous in sharing other materials, supplies, and equipment. Most notably they gave the school district a wonderful portable building to house a preschool program on the Eagleridge Elementary School campus. In other words, they have supported education with physical resources in addition to cash awards.

•Mr. Callender helped us launch our Communications Advisory Committee which has been going strong for six years. He has brought his expertise to assess current state of communications in the district.

•Sponsoring and attending the county-wide Math Olympiad competitions.
Mr. Callender is always in attendance to cheer on our students and recognize
them for their accomplishments.

The list could go on and on. District Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning Mr. Scott
Brittain said, “Jeff’s fingerprints are all over what we have done and what we are doing. The fingerprints you leave will be on our kids. Thank you from me, the district and our kids.”

Recently, Mr. Callender retired from Phillips66, but he said he will remain very involved in the schools and community. “Ferndale is a great place to live, work, learn and grow,” said Callender. “As I look back, some of the things I am most proud of is the infrastructure that Phillips66 has contributed to the community: Northwest Park Soccer Fields, help in building the Ferndale Boys’ and Girls’ Club, funding the new cross-walk near the Ferndale Library, and the many volunteer hours that Phillips66 employees spent on Star Park. It’s been a wonderful experience for me, it’s been rewarding. There are great people in this district—students, staff, faculty and volunteers.”

Callender is a member of the State College Board of Trustees. He will continue his service on the district Communications Advisory and devote his volunteer hours to the Boys’ & Girls’ Club.
