English Language Arts

Compass LearningCompass Learning Odyssey is an online math and literacy curriculum that uses video, audio, animation, and interactive writing tools to engage students in learning. Learning pathways have already been assigned to students from this school year. The username and password is your child’s seven digit student id number. Under ‘School’ on the login page, students should type Ferndale. To access your child’s assignments and view reports, use the same login and add a capital P to the end of both username and password.

Imagine Learning:  Imagine learning is a research-based language and literacy software program that features interactive activities, videos, and games. Imagine Learning is recommended for English language learners and students who need additional support with their literacy skills. Students who used the program during the 2015/16 school year can access their account and continue learning over the summer. Please see the handout in your child’s report card about how to access this program.

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge:  Join the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge and become a reading superhero! This free, online reading program is designed especially for children. The challenge runs through Sept 9, 2016. Read and log minutes all summer long. Unlock stories and earn rewards. Help set a new reading world record!

Wacky Web Tales:  Kids use their knowledge of the parts of speech to create silly, mad-lib type puzzles. Choose a topic, fill in the required parts of speech and read the humorous story that students create. The site provides a help button if kids need more support with understanding the different parts of speech.

Math

ST Math: ST Math is game-based instructional software designed to boost math comprehension and proficiency through visual learning. Help Jiji the penguin move across the screen by solving math puzzles.  A fun and engaging way to learn more math!  Access summer ST math from the school links on the Student Resource page on the Ferndale website.  Students will enter their picture password to access their account.  If your child is not an existing user, contact our office and we will set up your child’s ST Math account.

Xtra MathXtra Math is a free, web-based math fact fluency program. Students receive feedback on each problem they attempt and progress graphs motivate them to continue practicing. Parents are also informed each week via email of their child’s performance. Current users can continue their work from the year, or you can sign up for a new account. Just click on the ‘Get Started for Parents’ tab on the website.

RefractionRefraction focuses on teaching fractions and discovering optimal learning pathways for math education. Refraction lets you bend, split, and redirect lasers to power spaceships filled with lost animals! Help free as many animals as you can by expanding your knowledge of fractions.

Keyboarding

Type to Learn (TTL4):  Keyboarding is an essential skill that will help prepare students for the future. Students have been learning how to type using the Type to Learn 4 program at school. This program teaches correct finger placement in a fun, game-like atmosphere. Directions for how to download this program on your computer can be found on the Ferndale website. The site code for TTL4 can be found on the information sheet that was included with your child’s report card. Student username is first and last name, up to 15 characters without any spaces, hyphens or apostrophes. For example: Joe Smith’s username would be JoeSmith. Password is the same as their computer login.

iPad Apps for Home Practice

 

Here are some of the iPad apps we use in  classrooms throughout the year.  You may consider downloading some of these apps to provide additional practice for your child.  Many apps have the option to adjust the difficulty level.  Apps are free on the iTunes store unless the price is noted.
