Levy funds teacher salaries, classified staff and extracurricular programs for students
Ferndale School District invites community members to attend a meeting to learn more about its Maintenance and Operations Levy and how these funds are used for student learning. Dates and times of the meetings are as follows:
- Tuesday, November 24, 7:00 p.m. during the regular school board meeting
- Tuesday, December 8, 6:30 p.m. during a special meeting of the Ferndale School Board
The November 24 meeting will be held at the Vista Middle School Library, 6051 Vista Drive in Ferndale. The meeting on December 8 will be in the Ferndale High School Library, 5830 Golden Eagle Drive.
The public is welcome and encouraged to ask questions about the levy renewal.
“Our community has a history of supporting its public schools and we appreciate this support,” said Ferndale School Board President Kevin Erickson. “We want to share how we use this type of funding for student learning.”
At the second meeting, the Ferndale School Board will vote on a resolution to place the levy renewal on the February 9, 2016, Special Election ballot. The Ferndale community has supported an M&O Levy for Ferndale schools since 1977.
At just over $14 million, the M&O Levy represents approximately twenty five percent of all school funding. The levy funds one quarter of teacher salaries and two-thirds of all classified staff in such areas as special education, nutrition/food service, maintenance, transportation, and administrative support.
The levy also funds all extracurricular student programs, such as athletics, music, and technology. A portion of funding is used for the school district’s transportation and safety programs, as well.
