Fall Sports Registration

The middle school fall sports season is upon us. Football practice starts Monday August 28.   Cross Country, Girls Softball, and Boys Soccer starts Wednesday August 30.

Registration must be complete prior to your student participating in practice. Final Registration deadline for Fall Sports is September 8, 2017; however, it is recommended registration is completed for your student no later than August 25 to be eligible for the first practice day and first competition/game of the year.

It is important to note our registration process has two parts.

Registration Part I:

Complete our one page registration card and return it to our main office as soon as possible, so we know you are planning to participate. Box 1769 Ferndale, WA 98248-1769;   scan and e-mail to ; or turn directly into our main office, which opens on Tuesday August 22.


Registration Part II:

The following checklist of eligibility requirements must be completed before a student may begin participating in Fall Sports practices, except where noted. Registration Part II only needs to be done once a year annually for any Sport played during the school year. _____ Parent and Student Complete the online Athletic Eligibility Participation Packet.

Access the online Athletic Eligibility Participation Packet by going to your Skyward Family Access Account.  Skyward Family Access Account. If you need help with a user name and password to access your account, please contact Kathy Leamer in the Horizon Main Office at 383-9851.   Your student will also need to go to his/her Skyward Access Account and under forms complete the Student Athletic Participation Packet.

This requirement must be completed before a student is allowed to participate.

_____ Have an up-to date Physical on file with Horizon Middle School main office

Physicals are good for two years at the middle school level. If you do not have a physical on file with Horizon from last school year, you will want to make an appointment with a medical provider as soon as possible to obtain a physical; sometimes, getting an appointment can take several days. This requirement is met by downloading a copy online through Skyward Family Access or by submitting to the Horizon main office. This requirement must be completed before a student is allowed to participate.

_____ Have Current Health Insurance.

This requirement is met by submitting Health Insurance information on your online Athletic Eligibility Participation Packet.  If your family does not have health care insurance for your student, forms are available in the Horizon main office or you may click on the link to the Whatcom Alliance for Health Advancement (WAHA), an organization that can help you with all aspects of obtaining health care for your family.  This requirement must be completed before a student is allowed to participate.

_____ Purchase an Associated Student Body (ASB) Sticker–$20

ASB stickers are good for the entire school year and will be supplied to students to place on their school ID card. ASB stickers are required for participating in Horizon Sports and Clubs.  ASB stickers also provide students discounts for school events.   Final deadline to purchase for participating in Fall Sports is September 8.

_____ Paid Athletic Participation Fee–$30

The athletic participation fee is a one-time fee for the entire school year.  If a student is qualified for free lunch, the fee is $10.  If the student is qualified for reduced lunch, the fee is $20.  Please pay by September 8 to participate in fall sports.

_____ Pay any outstanding school fines.

Final deadline to pay outstanding fines for participating in Fall Sports is September 8.  If there are extenuating circumstances that prevent you from paying outstanding fines by the deadline, please contact assistant principal, Tim Keigley, to discuss an alternative.

Practices typically take place Monday through Friday, 2:40 pm-4:30 pm. The first day of practice for all teams will start in the Horizon Gym. Football and Boys Soccer practice is at Horizon Middle School. Girls Softball practices at Ferndale High School. Cross country typically starts practice at Horizon Middle School and then goes off site to practice. Cross Country, Girls Softball and Boys Soccer athletes need 8 practices to be eligible for competition play. Students playing football need 10 practices to be eligible for competition play. Beginning on the first day of school, an activity bus is available to transport your student home at 4:30 pm, Monday-Thursday.


The first games/meet of the season will begin the week of September 11. Stay tuned for schedules to be posted on our athletic website page in early September. Uniforms will be handed out by the second week of practice. On away game/meet days, buses transport your student to and from the event. Parent/guardians will need to pick up their student-athlete up at Horizon Middle School after game/meet days unless you sign your student out with the head coach at away games.
