On Thursday, June 1, seven Ferndale High School students from Ms. Carole Scanes culinary program competed in the first ever Ferndale High School Culinary Throwdown. In only ninety minutes, students were challenged to create a salad and an entrée using their choice of beef, chicken, pork or salmon, and, in the style of the popular television show, Iron Chef, a “mystery ingredient” (hearts of palm) was revealed to them just prior to the competition. The competitors had to incorporate the secret ingredient into their meals.
Superintendent Dr. Linda Quinn, School Board President Dr. Kevin Erickson and other Ferndale Schools staff were enlisted to judge the competition. Judges sampled each entrée and salad, and questioned the competitors about ingredients and methods.
The competition was organized by Ms. Scanes, Interim Director of Food Services Bette Hunt, food services staff and our quality of life service partners from Sodexo.
Ms. Scanes said, “this is an extraordinary event and (Sodexo staff) have done an amazing job. This was the best thing (the kids) could do with their passion for cooking.”
