District Webmaster Walks the Needle's Halo for Fred Hutchinson
On Friday, April 21, 2017, Ferndale School District Webmaster, Neil McKay was privileged to take a walk on the Seattle Space Needle’s outer halo, 520 feet in the air. The halo is the outer ring that extends from the Space Needle and acts as a sunshade for the restaurant directly below. It has a 138 foot diameter and Fewer than 100 people have walked on the halo since the Space Needle opened its doors 55 years ago on April 21, 1962.
Neil earned this privilege through his fundraising efforts for the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center last year during the second annual “Base2Space” stair climb in which he and more than 1200 other participants climbed the 832 steps from the base of the Space Needle to the observation deck. Participants committed to raising at least $175 for “The Hutch” and the top ten fundraisers won the right to walk on the Space Needle’s halo. Neil was the number 4 fundraiser, raising $4,836.
During the halo walk, Neil, who went by the stage name, “Johnny Trash” during the stair climb and halo walk, wore a sweatshirt with the names of those close to a hundred people who donated to the fundraiser. “I wanted the donors to be with me on the halo. They are the ones who earned it for me,” he said.
While he admits being nervous, Neil said he was not scared. “An engineer walked with me and talked me through it. It felt like I was being trained for a maintenance job,” he said. “I was too nervous to do more than glance at the view, but I chatted and joked with the tourists on the observation deck.”
Neil has already begun fundraising for this year’s Base2Space stair climb which occurs on Sunday October 1. “I plan on walking the halo again next year so I need to be in that top ten again.”
Way to go Neil!
