Congratulations to Windward High School Student Mason Waller and Ferndale High School Student Ellie Baader who were selected as student school board members.
“I am thrilled that Ellie and Mason will be joining our School Board for the upcoming year. As we head into our fourth cycle of selecting and including student members, the Board is more convinced than ever of their importance. We are strengthened as a leadership team and our services are improved as a result of their youthful energy, perspectives and insights,” said Superintendent Linda Quinn.
At Wednesday’s special school board meeting, school board members interviewed nine students for the two board positions: Ellie Baader, Logan Browne, Jordyn Fassett, Ariana Fox, Yelena Kazantseva, Alexandra McBeath, Cordelia Pallares, Taya Shuey and Mason Waller. Each of these students had strong convictions about serving their school district.
“We are grateful to each of the students who applied. The process of selecting just two new student members for the 2017-2018 School Board was difficult because we had so many wonderful candidates. Because each applicant has unique insights that can shape our district governance, I plan to invite all of them to be part of an advi
sory committee during the year ahead,” added Quinn.
Ellie and Mason will be sworn into office at next Tuesday’s regular board meeting.
The role of the student school board member is to provide a student perspective into the decision-making process at the board level. They will sit at the board table at all board meetings, participate in discussions with other school board members, and exercise non-binding (advisory) votes on matters brought before the board in open session.
Welcome, Mason and Ellie!
